Visual Storytelling Evaluation
For the Visual Storytelling project, we were to create a range of products inspired by a chosen book from the list provided. After lots of visual research and constantly back and forth between ideas I finally settled and chose The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. The jungle book is a well-known story of a human cub who must find his way through the law of the jungle with help from many different animal friends.
After doing some research into the story I started my research process looking at different visuals and products which I could create. A big source of my research was linked to Pinterest as I found this an easy source of finding other creative work. After creating research, I began experimenting with character sketches before thinking more about landscapes and instead focusing on the idea of the botanicals and creating a pattern element which could be included on my products. I really enjoyed this part of the project as I was able to experiment with distinctive styles and look at different artists who could inspire my own work.
After experimenting I was able to develop my own artwork and finally created some final pieces of illustration which I felt could be used on assorted products. I also thought about various products looking at a stationary range, however unfortunately this did not go fully to plan as I found some products, I originally aimed for were too expensive and would not be efficient in making a profit. However, after finding printing and looking at the process I was able to send off my final artwork and begin the process. Unfortunately, during this time, I did come across some issues, such as printing and processing tasking too long with different companies as well as samples not being successful and therefore having to change the whole design to fit a new method of printing.
However, after finalising designs and printing processes I was able to send off for my final products and begin thinking of elements. For example, during this time I really had to look at prices and see how they would work for myself opt make a profit. I also looked at packaging as I wanted to create packaging that did not cause too much of an expense, however, still looked professional and still show off the product. I found this side of the project fun as I was able to finalise elements which I had been working on for a long time ready for the point of sale.
Once I had more time, I also started completing more research prepping for the market looking at a layout that would help elevate and sell my products. I also started thinking about my branding, I did at the time have branding I used on my social media’s and Etsy that I was happy with, however for this project I still wanted to show development therefore I looked at changing the background and the overall theme to fit Christmas and the current time of year. I found this successful and began applying it to my social media and Etsy to help give more of a professional look.
After lots of planning it was time for the first point of sale, I set up my products like planned and overall, I was happy with the look and felt it showed my product and my brand off in a very professional way. I made many sales during the day and was happy with how it all came together. At times I did feel that my products were overpriced, however these are prices that I usually charge for other products I sell online and how I had worked them out with the overall cost of the products to be produced so I did not what to charge less. On the day I found my to do lists were the most popular as I sold out over the day, I found it super interesting to see which products were more popular.
Overall, I was happy with the point of sale and this project and felt It really communicated my chosen narrative, as well as representing myself in a brand in a very professional way. If I were to improve on different elements, I would think about being more organised for ordering certain products, as although I was fine for most, I had a lot of troubles with the notebook and was unable to sell them on the day and unfortunately still waiting on the delivery. Therefore, I would give myself a bigger window of time for sending off and waiting for the products. However, overall, I feel i was successful and followed the brief in my own way whilst still completing what was asked of me.
